Try updating your mouse driver and make sure you are using the latest version of Firefox.

Buy another mouse or get one from your friends and check to see if it works before doing anything drastic.

Yup, no problem here! I have two releases of FF (1.5 and 2) and I have two mice (one cabled, one wireless) and I have a touchpad with a "simulated" wheel...all work well in both FFs...

It should work by default. If not, you might need updated mouse drivers.
