you can run a wire from your existing panel to your garage. inside the garage you add a sub-panel. if you just want the electricity to the garage for lights and plugs then a 60 amp sub-panel should suffice.

I would seek the advice of an electrican. What do you use your gargage for,, wood working, plugging in a compressor??? These tools demand alot of draw (electricity) in order for them to function properly. If they do not get enough power the motors wear. Also, what is the distance from the shop from the house. You will lose a certain amount of current by simply running a length of wire. to a subpanel box. If you reside in Canada, only a certified electrican can access the panel box. If you for go getting a permit and make the changes yourself, you house insurance may be null and void.. Sometimes it is better to call the professionals. good luck

for starters no,you cannot split after the meter, it is posible but not recomended, reason why it's just for safety. second and i think the best is that you can actually get a 60 amp double pole circuit breaker (30/30) install a raceway or buy sl cord cable it's a cable that its wetherproof with 4 wires (black, red, white, green) get a sub panel intall a 60 amp breaker to use as your main, connect the two hot wires ( red and black)to the distribuition bars or (buss bars) connect your white to your neutral bar and green to your green bar, make sure that you get the same brand of breakesr as the sub panel beacuse of compatibility. then after that you can come out with power for outlets and lights, also you can add a 220v outlet with an 40 amp double pole breaker.

No, you cannot branch off between the meter and the house panel box. You can run a sub panel from your main box to your garage and the garage will have its own breaker box (sub panel) inside the garage, though.

Sub-panel is the best way to go. If this is very difficult your other option is to request the power company install another service entrance to the garage. It will have its own meter.
