My employer gave us the opportunity to have remote access online for our work so we can work from home on occassion. Can I deduct my home office since I had set it up just for this purpose?

You might be able to take a deduction for a home office but the rules are very strict.

The area you set aside must be used exclusively for business purposes. Any personal use what so ever disqualifies the deduction.

You must be doing it for your employer's convenience, not your own.

There are other requirements as well. Here's a link to an article on the IRS' website that goes in to more detail and has links to the various instructions and forms: http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=108138,00.html

The IRS has made it more difficult to claim the home office deduction. You cannot claim expenses that were reimbursed by your employer. The area of your home has to be exclusively for business use and is based on sq ft of the home you use for business vs the total sq ft of the home. Check out IRS pub 17 for all the details. Good luck.
