take a big ziplock bag packed with cotton balls. The egg should be in the center of the cotton balls. Loosely packed, not totally packed. (you could also use saran wrap instead of the bag.) Then put this into a box or styrafoam container filled with either packing peanuts, or loosely packed crumpled sheets of bubble wrap. Make sure there's not a lot of room for things to move around inside...just a little bit. Seal the box.
This worked for me when I did a similar project in high school. We additionally attached a drag chute made out of a cut down garbage bagand attached to a corner of the box(the object is to make the box hit on a corner...disperses energy better). It survived a four story plunge onto concrete.

Okay this is probably the craziest thing you've ever heard but seriosly if you don't believe me try it!!! My brother had to do one and he remembered about 10 minutes before it was time for school so he grabbed two beagles took out the jelly filling and put it inside the holes. He then got masking tape (like that really wide one) and wrapped it around (360 degrees) over the holes to make sure the egg would't fall..and believe me it survived totally unharmed. He got the best egg drop award for creativeness and least materials used to construct it. It's so simple yet so effective. You should try it really works test it for yourself plus you would save yourself a lot of time instead of having to come up with some gigantic idea go small...go for a beagle..lol...hope this helps :)

Make something with toothpicks. Thats what my class used for our egg drop challenge and their were a handful of people that didnt crack the egg when the egg was dropped. Its good to make a design thats very tall and very light. You should have different levels so that the toothpicks slow down the egg at every level and then have a base to catch the egg. Make sure your base isnt too heavy or too strong. make it light.

I had this same project in the 5th grade. I just filled a big Ziploc bag with tons of popcorn. then i wrapped the egg in bubble-wrap and placed in the middle of the bag so it was entirely surrounded by popcorn. then i placed that bag in another bag and filled it up with even more popcorn. it totally works. i got an A+
