des had a good answer and about the hip-hop vs rap, Hip-Hop is a culture which has four basic elements which are graffiti, DJs, MCs, and B-boys/breakdancing. anyone who likes Hip-hop probably already knows that, rap is the spoken part of Hip Hop, poetry over beats, my favorite genre, dont hate just cus u dont feel a certain type of music, its usually rock listeners who start these things about y people like rap or how bad rap is

Hip-Hop and Rap to me are like the same thing really. People try to justify a difference between the two, and I understand it, but they are both doing the same thing. It's because it's spoken word poetry. There is commercial garbage, but there are a lot of rappers who pick up a pen and write what they are going through and try to be creative, what's so wrong with that?

If it is a good rap song, by a good rapper, then the beats are good and catchy. Also you can understand what their saying and the lyrics actually make sense and mean something.
I cannot stand a bad rap song though.
Theres background music in rapping as well and occasionly there will be parts with people singing.
So that's what I listen to it and why I think it is a music genre.

Jazz drummers had 1/2 hour drum solos coz people love just the rhythm. People love poetry for the words. Mix them together and you have double the fun. I actually hate hip hop and like rap. Some rap ltrics are very clever and well written.

there's something u guys dont understand. these rappers were people who had little to nothing growing up and had nothing to look forward to. they were also troubled teens and always getting in trouble when they were younger. they had always dreamed of having somethin, to be able to gloat about something because really they didnt have anything worth anything. now they have achieved something and they can finally brag about what they have-- something they never thought would happen to them. so when u see em talkin about 'bling' or their cars and stuff they are just fulfilling their dreams. leave em alone.
the girls u see in the videos, they only include em because they know that way the make the most money out of the franchise, and besides the girls agree to be in the videos; they werent kidnapped or any such things. they agreed because they are receivin a hefty amount of cash, and i doubt u'd say no if u were asked to dance for 15 seconds in a bikini for $200,000.
And if they rap about things that arent gloating, like 'choppers' and stuff , they are only being realistic. where they're from thats what happens. unfortunately they have been involved at one time or the other and thats the life they know. u can only say what u know, u know. I agree that the profanity is unnecessary but most people that dont listen to rap use the exact same words. yes, the 'f' word, the 'n' word(even white people) and all. it is foolish to deceive oneself and hypocrisy like that as just as foolish. i dont know where u get off talkin about use of profanity. its a classic example of the pot calling the kettle black(or something like that) or the one with log in eye tryin to remove speck from other one's eye.
Finally, rap is a combo of poetic, rhetoric(yes metaphor, simile, parallel structure, metonymy u name it) and slight vocal ability(carrying the verses, emphasizing the parts needed to emphasize and making the verses go with the beat) and ingenuity when given somethin to work with. But in the end, if u dont like it, just let it lie. we dont need ur complaints.

it is mainly poetry , it sometimes describes the situation that the rapper is in , sometimes they rap just to have fun. I listen to it because of the many sounds that are mixed into the songs.
