Not all doors are just kicked open by police in real life. In the movies and TV shows they are, usually. This is more for dramatic effect than fact. There is a thing called artistic license in entertainment. That means basically not sticking to 100% fact. Unless something is called a "documentary" or said to be real it may have embellished elements.
More often in the reality based shows, like COPS you will see one or two cops with a heavy cylindrical metal battering ram used to knock down a door.
But if it is a real life situation, and a cop kicks in a door it's like one of the other answerer's said. That being if you are on the outside and the door opens to the inside it can be more easily opened by the force of a kick. Not to mention the fact that Police officers trained in various situations of this nature. If they need to get in through a door they probably assess the situation and the door, and have a reasonable idea if they are capable of kicking it open or not. For instance if the door frame is steel, the cop obviously wouldn't try kicking it open. However if the door frame is wood, then a strong kick can probably break the wood around the door jam plate (the little metal plate at about waist level where the bolt of the door knob catches) and allow the door to forced open.

my door is metal i think... and it has a metal lock that sticks through the side, along with the lock that freezes the door knob.

So i don't think you could kick that down.. but then again who cares?
If someone wanted to break in they wouldnt kick down your door.. that would either wake you up or cause a disturbance. and they could alway just break a window if they wanted to be as obvious as kicking down the door...

And if you honestly think that all movies are 100 percent realistic then you should probably get out of the house a little bit more...

i dont think they actually are like that three points

1) it is done in the movie to keep the plot going and not waste time

2) it is done in the movie to show how tough and effective the cops are

3) there are movies where they attempt to kick in the door and it doesnt work or they have had to use some sort of battering ram

They are specially made to give way easily. I would not try it with a regular house door. It is called MOM Magic Of Movies!

Those Americans can't actually afford to live in those $250K homes. They either have rented furniture or none at all.

This is the "Home Depot and Wal*Mart age". Everything is too cheap. They have credit up to $9K on the average. It is all about "I/Me" and worry about paying tomorrow. They actually ruined the bankruptcy law for everyone else.

In the movies they use hollow core doors. Most homes/apartments have solid core (unless they're owned by a cheap landlord).

well most doors dont have a dead bolt and the door is made of cheap wood normally. So all that keeps people out is an inch or so of wood.

Maybe it's just that American cops are really strong and skilled. Or maybe it's just a movie!
