The answer depends on what you are comparing. Compare a 100 watt incandescent with a 9 watt compact flourescent and you will be disappointed by the performance of the CF. If you know the light you want, check the incandescent for the amount of lumens (for example see what a 75 watt bulb shows for lumens), then get a flourescent that produces more. The flourescent will deteriorate slightly with age. A flourescent also comes in different colors. Warm is more like an incandescent, daylight or cold is more like an office building white light.

Fluorescent bulbs are brighter. The light they give off is caused by the emmission of electromagnetic radiation. Incandescent bulbs have a filament which is heated by electricity.

100 watts vs 25 watts is not the question. Each light produces lumens ( measure of light). 1000 lumens is the same produced by incandescent or fluorescent.
