I get this sometimes from men I don't know. They think nothing of coming up to me and telling me to smile and making some comment about me not smiling - you know, despite them not knowing what is going on in my life e.g. maybe my father died and I don't feel like smiling.

But it seems that guys only do this and they only do it to girls.

Have guys ever been told to smile by other guys or by girls?

What is it with these people?

Maybe they find you attractive and are looking for a way to engage you in conversation. I agree, it's a sad attempt, but that would be my guess.

Well don't assume it's just the guys telling the girls. It could be vice-versa, or i've even had other dudes to tell me to smile more. My own friends say it sometimes. I just think that i'm not always paying attention to my facial expression and i don't always have a mirror in front of my face. I do consider myself to be a pretty happy free-spirited kid, but i do think i could smile more, and so should everyone else. Just remeber, people don't want to be around mug-faces, they want to be with people who smile and are happy. This world would be a much better place if so many people didn't take life so damn seriously, and if people were'nt so damn up tight and insecure about how they look and feel. Just know you don't have to be phony; when you don't feel like smiling don't smile just to impress other people, however you should smile sometimes, at least.
PEACE! :)

I am one of those annoying people. I use the,"Smile!" aproach to others as a way to reach out to strangers. I use it on young and old, men and women, whoever. I don't run around doing it all of the time. For example, I'll see a woman in the grocery store starring at the iasle looking like she's got the whole world on her shoulders, and if I open my spirit to her and jokingly say,"Smile !"And I am basicly giving her a hug in a non-touching way.I think boys use it as a way to approach girls but it's not always evil. I live in the U.S. and our society draws a pretty big invisible circle around each person and we need little stupid ways of communicating. Love and Light.

Just to it down to first of all they actually want to get to know you then they lose their confidence so they use that to see if they can get you to do what they want. That way they know you are into them or not. Then there are the ones who just want to get you all flustered because they are just jerks and have no confidence in themselves whatsover and have to make others look bad or uncomfortable to make themselves feel good. Either way, just stay away from them. Be polite, don't lower your standards.

b/c life is too short not too; they are sharing a moment in time with you; accept the gift that someone took the moment in their life to connect to yours; why disregard a free gift of communication from another soul on this earth??? Someone once told me, you don't have a problem until your heart is not beating and you are not breathing; why not be able to reach out and touch someone no matter what is going on in your life; sometimes, you need someone to get you to snap out of it; obviously someone made an impact on you , look at your post; Smile !

I've been told to smile by women. I think it's a type of flirting. They think you look cute, but they want to see a smile out of you, so they ask.

I don't think it's anything other than that.

I have this happen to me a lot. I am normally in a rush and have to many things on my mind to worry about smiling. The only thing about it is when I am told this it kinda pisses me off. If I do not want to smile then I wont. I dunno it is annoying.
