In the beginning they thought calling it "Oak", but this name was already registered, so, when they were thinking in a new one, they realized that "java" (the name that American give familiarly to coffee) was a great name, so that's it.

It's surprisingly difficult to find a good name for a programming language, as the team discovered after many hours of brainstorming. Finally, inspiration struck one day during a trip to the local coffee shop" Gosling recalls. Others have speculated that the name Java came from several individuals involved in the project: James gosling, Arthur Van hoff, Andy bechtolsheim. [McCarthy]

As Coffee is the inspiration for this langauge, also u can see the logo of Java is Cup, Plate and Steam....Java is same like coffee, like just use/mix the gradiant and rady to drink (water, milk, sugar coffee powder etc.)

Apparently Gosling got inspired while visiting a coffee shop which name was JAVA in sumatra indonasia.

That's rite....
Oak (the name prior to Java) was dismissed due to a patent search finding an older programming language with the same name.

Others have speculated that JAVA came from individuals from the project as an acronym - (J)ames Gosling, (A)rthur (V)an Hoff, (A)ndy Bechtolsheim

At this point it was understood that another name had to be chosen. Apparently Gosling got inspired while visiting a coffee shop.
