Go to http://www.sourceforge.net which is a large repository of open source projects.

Look at the help wanted section for coders.

Find a project that interests you and sign on.

You'll learn all kinds of stuff about writing software, especially in a collaborative environment; you'll be part of a team developing useful software; you might even want to make your own project or a branch project that you can call your own and use as a resume point.

1. Start building up a "resume" of certifications from an online authority like BrainBench.

2. Start bidding on some projects at Rent-a-Coder

3. Go to CraigsList's Computer Gigs section for your local area and start applying for anything that's in your field.

Brag about your school projects. Work on them some more. Work on some other personal projects. If you need more motivation or ideas, find a job or project at school for a teacher, you could even get paid.
