As a believer in personal responsability I prefer my life to be my own. People hunt sharks, ski into trees, hike into oblivion, yet I am forced to wear a seat belt. I say revoke it. What say you?

Although I am a Libertarian, I say NO. I am against mandatory motorcycle helmet laws, however. Here's the difference. If a motorcyclist gets in a wreck, he and only he will suffer the consequences of not wearing a helmet. A driver on the other hand can mitigate further damage by maintaining control over the vehicle. Therefore, passengers, pedestrians or other drivers who may otherwise be compromised benefit from the seat belt law.

Keeping others belted in there vehicles only makes sense . I watched a video of a guy in a car chase who rolled the Suv at 80miles an hour and was ejected over 75 feet across a divider only to be struck by a car and more then once as he landed on the expressway by traffic headed in the opposite direction . Who is to say how many accidents could be prevented and lives saved by safety belts .
This is my best argument for seat belts . Many more stories of people thrown clear of totally demolished cars who only survived because they had no belt on .
I will never wear a belt when I am driving but usually buckle up with other drivers . The once every 5 years that happens cause I do not trust others driving . knock on wood I have never had an accident but have had 18 tickets over the years and have been considered a risky driver by insurance companies . Speed in excess of 100 miles an hour anyone . Can you say jail . I have been several times . But at the time I was not in traffic and traveling at night between Cities on an expressway with a clear road in front of me . Smokey hiding with his lights of in the bushes is how I get the tickets . Before you say radar detector I have had the best and unless they are gunning traffic picking speeders at random from the packs your chance of betting a radar gun at 2;am is next to nothing . You are like a deer in the head lights detector goes of lights come on and you are busted .

You are not living in a vacuum here. Anything that makes you less safe in a car affects other people...not just yourself.

When you blast your face through the windshield after a relatively minor fender bender and need $100,000 worth of reconstructive surgery, where do you think your insurance company is going to get the money to pay your claim?

From ME and the rest of their sensible seat belt-wearing policyholders, that's who! They will raise rates on everyone.

So I'll grant you one exception. If you'll sign a waiver with your insurance company stating that if you're not wearing a seat belt when you have an automobile accident, they pay nothing for your injuries or death, then I might say go ahead and maim or kill yourself.

Finally, if you don't put a seat belt on your child, you are criminally (and morally) negligent.

In Maine, mandatory seat belts are a "secondary" law - in other words you cannot be stopped for not wearing a seat belt, but if you are stopped for another infraction - and you don't have your seat belt fastened, you will receive a citation for not wearing the seat belt.
How dumb is this?
As an added note, while the seat belt law is being debated in the legislature to make it a primary law (you can be stopped for not wearing it) helmets for motorcyclists remain optional and voluntary.
Again, how dumb is that?

I would say no. It's sad to see adults leaving their kids unbuckled but they have their seat belt on. I've talked to a few DPS troopers and they've told me of some horrible stories with accidents where people have been killed without seat belts. Of course, you have to understand that wearing them doesn't make you invincible. I was told of an accident where a women was wearing a seat belt but was killed because she was in an SUV driving over 90mph and went out of control. She rolled the vehicle several times and didn't make it. Unfortunately, you sometimes need laws to help people that can't think for themselves.

No. The Legislature finds that a mandatory seatbelt law will contribute to reducing highway deaths and injuries by encouraging greater usage of existing manual seatbelts, that automatic crash protection systems which require no action by vehicle occupants offer the best hope of reducing deaths and injuries, and that encouraging the use of manual safety belts is only a partial remedy for addressing this major cause of death and injury. The Legislature declares that the enactment of this section is intended to be compatible with support for federal safety standards requiring automatic crash protection systems and should not be used in any manner to rescind federal requirements for installation of automatic restraints in new cars.

I used to think so. Until I got rear-ended by a car going 55 mph. The driver didn't see the stopped traffic, b/c she was looking for a phone on the floor-boards.

That seatbelt saved my life. The carseat saved my 3 year old's life.

I wouldn't have worn one if it weren't the law.
