The man who looks like a "snake/serpent" standing in the crowd is Hester Pryne's husband. His name is Roger Chilingworth and he is much older than her. He is also a doctor. She cheated on him while he was away learning from the Indians and in result conceived a child. The child is the reason everyone knows she committed adultery.
