The fastest way to improve at basketball would first be shooting. Take a piece of tape and mark ten spots around the court where you can best get the ball to the basket. If that's only five to ten feet, then so be it. Only remove a piece of tape if you can make 8 of 10 shots consistently from that spot. Gradually, you will feel comfortable enough to move farther back.
Running is also extremely essential. Running some baseline touches before you practice works great because you will take the majority of your shots while you are fatigued. Dribbling a ball while running is very helpful as well.

Practice Doesnt make Perfect!
Perfect Practice makes Perfect!

Practice perfectly if not every day, every other day. Even if your out there for 20 minutes, it's still great. If you want to be an exotic or out-of-the ordinary, practice something you wouldnt excpect to do [ex. If your tall like 5'10" or above, work TONS on shooting].

It is hard to get great at basketball but easy to get good.

Depends on what you need to improve. I used to go jogging and dribble at the same time, and that helped alot with my coordination. Also if you read something, like a note or sign while standing still and dribbling, it helps train you to not look at the ball. Everything else you just have to practice doing, like shooting and passing. Oh and the heavy weighted basketballs help build strength.

Work a little of everything a day... It also depends on what position you play. If your a Guard, work on shots from the perimeter. If your a forward, work on shooting off the backboard. If your a center, ask someone around your size to practice defending you and you can try getting around them for layups and dunks if your tall enough. The way to improve your defense is to SCRIMMAGE SCRIMMAGE SCRIMMAGE

Well I would say practice but that happened overtime
Um well the best way proably is to shoot a lot for a while just to get yourself back into shape. You need to get back into it before you start or else your first game will be relentless.
I would also suggest playing a few pick-up games with a friend or one that knows a lot about baskebtall and prefferbally has some experience
