Why is there a northern Ireland?

Ireland went into a civil war because some wanted independence from the UK and others wanted to stay with them so they split. Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

Very simply because of the imperialistic inclinations of Great Britian that had started this whole thing from a long time ago, especially when scottish and british settlers went to populate the northern art of Ireland that is also known as Ulster. Since populated by protestanst, which make up the majority today, the Irish (catholic) feel discriminated and want to be part of the Republic of Ireland. Also this region has mineral deposits and mining boosted it's economy especially in the 16 adn 1700's.
It became more desirable for the British. So Northern Ireland is actually part of UK. For some it should not , for the others it should. That is the reason for IRA and terrorist activities in Belfast ect.

There is a northern ireland because the southern part of ireland became independant but some people still wanted to stay with the UK, so they formed northern ireland

Why not? They couldn't have the same name, so... because they're in the north......
