I stopped smoking two weeks ago, but I have gained 7 pounds. Right now I am 5'2" and weigh 189. This puts my BMI at 34.6 (Obese) I am only 30 pounds away from being morbidly obese. I keep debating this with myself, which is really worse? Smoking basically causes cancer and maybe an elevated blood pressure. But being overweight cause Diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and I am sure a few more thing then just smoking does. So, which do you think it worse? Why?

Smoking is worse. There is no cure for cancer, but if you re obese, you can work on becoming healthier. In smoking, the lungs become black (in some cases), and you can't fix the damage done. I'm not so sure about the cure of diabetes, but i do know that you can work on high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and other things( im not saying that you particularly but in general).

I think you need to quit smoking and focus on getting the weight off. Honestly i have no idea how people can get themselves to the point where they weigh that much. Eat better and exercise. That is the only way to lose weight. Smoking is a quick fix. Not to be rude or anything but 7 lbs when you weigh 189 is nothing... you're basically asking should i be fat and smoke or be fat and not smoke? You need a wake-up call.. your health is in jeopardy either way. I hope you can lose the weight safely... I feel bad for people who are literally trapped in a body they don't want. Please talk to your doctor and find a way to lose the weight and quit smoking. You will be so glad you did!

Smoking

While one might think you merely pick your poison, the living half of "Two Fat Broads" cooking show always insisted that her co-host died of smoking, not being overweight. That said, what killed her was smoking WHILE overweight.
The fact is that answering your question exactly is not possible. My family carries the genetic code for both tobacco addiction and living in spite of it: my grandmother smelled her sister's smoke and died at 82. Her sister, who did the smoking, also died at 82 ten years later. She merely had lung problems and a less peaceful death (my grandmother actually died on her feet, believe it or not.) Other people like Andy Kaufman live a pure-eatin' lifestyle and die early from other people's tobacco smoke. But neither were overweight. People who are overweight tend to more universally die younger because of universally inflicted extra wear on everything from joints to the heart.

I guess that answers the question, tho.

Smoking is probably the worst thing, but that's why a lot of people don't quit, because of the almost inevitable weight gain. I've read that the weight gain is chemical and in addition to that, people end up eating more to compensate. Many models and ballerinas smoke to curb their appetites. You can lose it, but most people have to exercise. But, if you don't smoke, you have more oxygen on hand to exercise more. It's really a tough call...

Although being overweight increases your risk of heart attacks and other various diseases, smoking will theoretically kill you quicker, so it is the "worse" of the two, and it is addicting.

Overall, it doesn't matter but you shouldn't have to choose one or the other, I think you can lose weight without smoking.

I think none is worse than the other. Both are dangerous enough to put your health in jeopardy.

It's a good start that you've quit smoking. For your weight problem, start modifying your lifestyle (diet, exercise, etc...)

Smoking is worse because if you are fat you can always get off your butt and lose the weight. As a smoker that constant stank won't go away.
