Even at $650 an ounce, it takes less than 2 cents worth of gold to plate a quarter. The companies that plated them probably sold a set (quarter, half, and dollar) for $10 or more. There's no silver under that gold, no matter what the ebay seller says.

It is a gimmick coin for the non coin collecting market. As it being pure silver, that is not true. They made the regular copper nickel clad and the silver clad. The silver clad has outer layers of .800 silver .200 copper bonded to a .209 core of silver .791 copper. It actually has .0739 oz of pure silver. The gold plate was added out side the mint and the coin is considered damaged by collectors. Take the best offer is all I can say. As for Ebay, fools are soon parted from their money.

most coin dealers scoff at a modified coin. I know the ones you mean they are usually low quality coins that are gold plated to catch some poor suckers eye. Infact I bet you may be able to scratch and or peel off the coating. I wouldnt give it much value because the person who coated most likely wouldnt have coated a valuable coin. You arent rich or anything its just another gimmick.
