Why do we always think they may be way ahead of us with spacecraft etc. Why do we never assume they may be back in the stone age eg?

I love this mad question! You're right! Why...aliens might at this very moment be discussing whether an intercepted photo of the Duchess of Arbroath really is sexy enough to bring about an inter gallactic breeding programme?...Especially the one with her hat on!...

There's two questions: when and where. There are many trillions of planets in the universe, and it's possible one might be habitable to life. Also, scientists think the universe is about 17 billion years old, and our evolution only took about 4 or 6 billion years. So even if inteligent life existed elsewhere, it might already be long dead. And as for the stone age, you're talking about a span of a few thousand years compaired to the billions of years evolution takes. If life does exist on another planet, it's unlikely that it'll have creatures within a million years development time of either our past or future. However, then you come to the question that if they're millions of years more advanced than us, why havn't they sought us out.

Asuming aliens are maybe 100 or 200 years ahead of us in development is a plot device. It creates a dangerous, powerful external conflict while not offending anyone. After all, it's less offensive to have characters killing aliens than say characters killing Russians. Also, by only putting them relatively close to us in development, you allow the aliens to travel across vast distances to get to us, if it's a story set in the present, and even if it's set in the future like Star Wars or Star Trek, setting them so close to us makes them powerful, but not invicible, thus allowing the characters to find some way to defeat them and have a happy ending.

The reason they think that is because humans are kind of new to the universe. The universe was there a long time before we came so you have to think that there was life before us as well. They are most likey more smart then humans and could build better spacecrafts etc. Hope that helped

Actually the reason for this is that we are talking about aliens capable of crossing the vast reaches of space to arrive at the Earth and great us or eat us! So they would have to be very advanced in order to do this. We just need to hope they don't have a taste for human flesh.

No!
A very long time ago..... all of the life forms in the universe decided to move here to earth. Don't believe it? Look around!

The sea is full of aliens! the forests are full of them and many have yet to be discovered! We live in harmony with many alien species like our cats (God knows that they would run the earth their way if they could!) and our dogs as well as many other 'pets'.

These lower life forms only subject themselves to our will out of survival of the species. If you open your mind and really LOOK at what I'm saying in jest, you will see it isn't so far fetched!

Thats very true.look at Mars, with little life, but we always think that they will contact us, but just think if we dropped out of the sky on another planet and met people who were living lives like we were 2,000 year ago....

Possible missions to Europa (a moon of Jupiter) are going to see if life exists there. They don't expect to find anything as advanced as a caveman. They hope for bacteria.

Fiction hopes for advanced civilizations, because we languish in ignorance here.

almost certainly there are planets out there with cavement living on them just as there will be those more advanced than us.

And the odds are that there is a planet out there remarkably similar to this one.

Remember, we are but the blink of an eye on a tiny piece of dust compared to the universe
