well, everyone was at fault a little bit...
Ben Wallace's foul was a flagrant but that should have been it... end of story- Artest had to make a big scene of it and then the fan threw the beer- while he did escalate it and shouldn't have done it and he played a majjjjorr role in starting it i would say that artest SHOULD NOT as a professional athlete gone into the stands and hit a fan - that is completely unexceptible becuse this is their jobs and they know better- then both teams started going at it and hitting both fans and players so while both teams were largely at fault I would say regarding the fans actions wrong but at the same time he is a viewer of the game and should have been kicked out and maybe not allowed back in this season or whatever officials of the NBA/ Pistons choose but Artest had no reason to go into the stands and was punished greatly for his actions. sorry this is long but that is how i feel

People like to blame Ben Wallace, but the only thing he's guilty of is a shove to Ron Artest. That itself didn't lead to a brawl. This has happened many times in the NBA, and it didn't lead to what happened in Auburn Hills.

The situation didn't turn ugly until the cup was thrown and Artest entered the stands. It's worth noting however, that Artest didn't hit the fan he confronted.

The situation still could have been diffused rather quickly if not for Stephen Jackson. It was Jackson who entered the stands and started throwing punches at anyone he could reach. I think he deserves the majority of the blame.

The fan shouldn't have thrown the cup, but Artest needed to realize that he must keep his cool. And Stephen Jackson was most at fault; running around hitting people when nothing even happened to him. What a nutcase. And when Jermaine O'Neal coldcocked that little guy? Totally uncecessary.

So yeah, a few of the Pacers were at fault.

Ben Wallace started the whole thing... Artest committed a hard foul, and Wallace reacted like an idiot... just shut up and play the game, Ben.

When Wallace went after Artest, that's when the benches cleared.

The rest is history.

If Wallace just goes to the line to miss his two free throws (with two air balls, no doubt), none of that stuff happens.

BTW - a bunch of you don't have your facts straight. It was Ron Artest who committed a hard foul AGAINST Ben Wallace when Wallace drove to the basket with under a minute left in the game, and Indiana up by about 15 points. Artest fouled Ben hard, and Ben reacted by running up to Artest and shoving him. Artest was not the one who was fouled here.

Ben Wallace was the one who couldn't take the foul like a man.

Amazing. As many times as this has been shown, people STILL don't even know what actually happened.

Well, heck, here's a portion of the wikipedia article on the incident. You'll notice that Wallace tried to go after Artest even when Artest was lying on the scorers table...

"...The incident took place in a game that many had looked forward to for some time. Five months earlier, the Pistons had defeated the Pacers in an intense Eastern Conference Finals series on their way to the NBA title. The November 19 contest, televised nationally on ESPN and locally on select Michigan television stations including Detroit's NBC affiliate WDIV (Channel 4), would be the first rematch between the two rivals, and emotions figured to run high on both sides.

The brawl began with 45.9 seconds remaining in the game, with Indiana leading 97-82. Pistons forward/center Ben Wallace drove to the basket and was about to put up a shot when Pacers forward Ron Artest fouled him. Upset at being fouled hard when the game's outcome had effectively been decided, Wallace responded by shoving Artest. Several players from both teams joined the fray, resulting in an altercation.

The focus of the on-court scuffling gradually moved away from Artest. He then climbed up on the scorer's table and laid down on it. ANGERED BY ARTEST TAUNTING HIM AND PRETENDING TO GIVE A RADIO INTERVIEW WHILE LYING ON THE TABLE, WALLACE THREW A TOWEL AT HIM.. A spectator, John Green, then threw a cup at Artest while he was lying on the table. Artest responded by charging into the stands and confronting the man he mistakenly believed was responsible, triggering a violent response from nearby spectators. Pacers Stephen Jackson and David Harrison followed Artest into the stands, resulting in more punching and grappling with spectators.

Several spectators were struck by Pacer players, while a few retaliated with punches of their own, including Green. Others threw cups of beer and soda at Pacer players. Two spectators angrily walked onto the court. One of them, A.J. Shackleford, confronted Artest, who was making his way back to the court. Artest punched him, which started another melee that eventually included several Pacer players, most notably Jermaine O'Neal, who was shown on video striking another fan, later identified as Charlie Haddad.

A Palace administrator called the game with 45.9 seconds remaining, and the Pacers were awarded a 97-82 win. More beer, soda, ice, popcorn and even a chair were thrown at Pacer players and other personnel as they were escorted from the court. No players from either team spoke to the media before leaving the arena.

It was estimated that nine spectators were injured, though none of the injuries were thought to be serious. Two of the injured were taken to a local hospital..."

LOL, Wallace threw a TOWEL at Artest!!! LOL, oooo, what a man that Ben is!! I'll bet that hurt! LOL

The moral here: Don't mess with Ben Wallace unless you want to get a towel thrown at you LOL!

It was that cry baby Ron Artest. Take a foul like a man, this is a physical sport. He can give it but can't take it! If you can't stand getting heckled by fans, don't lie on the scorers table and act like a 2 year old!

it was ben wallace's fault, you can say. since he did do the foul. but then again, maybe the players should have controlled themselves.
