Transgendered: individuals who feel that they are not one of the two dichotomous genders (male or female). They may feel they are a mixture of male and female, neither, or a 'third gender' that is totally different. Transgenders often include masculine women, feminine men, and so on, although there are some people who look 'normal' (whatever that means), but can still identify as transgender in their minds. They, like transvestites, are completely happy in their bodies- they do not want to change them at all, just acknolwedge that they aren't entirely men or women in the way we currently define men and women.

Not to be confused with:

Transsexual: a person who has gender dysphoria (feels they have been born in the wrong body) and takes hormones and undergoes surgery to change their sex. Sometimes transgendered people may later become transsexuals, and transsexuals may, after surgery, be transgender (i.e. if a man transitioned to a woman, she may be happier as a woman, but still know that she's not quite right as a female, either- look up Kate Bornstein for a good example of this). Some transsexuals never do get on hormones or have surgery, and they are called non-operative, and while they may seem no different than transgenders, they are, because they feel trapped in the wrong body, but choose not to rectify it for any number of reasons, often including the high cost.

Hope that helps you!

Transgender is the state of ones gender identity not matching ones assgined physical gender. Transgender DOES NOT imply any form of sexual preference!
As defined, transgender is- "of, relating to, or designating a persons whose identity does not conform unambiguously to conventional notions of male or female gender, but combines or moves between these." -oxford english dictionary 2004

"A transgender person may have charachteristics which are nomally associated to one gender, exist elsewhere on the continum or outside of the continum as agender, intergender, or third gender." Transgender people may also identify as both male and female or in combiantion of any of the many spectrums."
I can't stress enough how transgender has absolutely nothing to do with sexual orientation. As a person whom identifies as transgender I can assure you of that. As a smaller subset of the community I am also a pre-operative transsexual and again that has nothing to do with my sexual preferences. Being transgender is all about ones personal self identification and the way in which they prefer to be perceived.

someone who disagrees with the gender role society has assigned to them (ie a male that doesn't want to be masculine or manly, or a woman that doesn't want to be girly or feminine)

i am transgendered as i do not feel comfortable with the role society has asked me as a male to play.. this term also applies to one's discomfort with the sexual role of assigned gender.. ie, i am a male but they idea of inserting my penis into something seems awkward..

however, big difference between transgender and transsexual. a transsexual man desires to have his penis removed and replaces with a vagina.. in my case, i do not desire this at all.
