this is a very common problem with GM / GMC ABS systems.
the typical cause is the ABS unit failing. have the abs system codes read this will tell you what is causing if there is an autozone in your area they can read codes and its free.
can also be cause by brake fluid contamination. bleed brake fluid until all is clean.

had the same thing happen on a 98 Jimmy lease that I had, took it back to dealer and they put on a new brake booster and that fixes the problem.

Nothing to mess with -- sounds like a master cylinder but not sure -- If you don't know have it checked out properly. How's your fluid level?

BY YOUR EXPLANATION, IT SOUNDS LIKE THE ENGINE MAY HAVE STUMBLED WHEN PROBLEM OCCURRED, CAUSING THE SHAKING, WHICH WOULD LEAD ME TOWARDS THE BRAKE BOOSTER. THE BOOSTER IS VACUUM CONTROLLED AND A VAC LEAK CAN CAUSE THE ENGINE TO STUMBLE
