It was in 1950 that an African American from Detroit, Dr. Ralph J. Bunche received the Nobel Peace Prize. He was the first black man to receive the distinguished prize for his work as a United Nations mediator; his efforts led to the 1949 Arab-Israeli armistice agreement.

Albert John Lutuli, a South African teacher and politician. He was awarded the 1960 Nobel Peace Prize for his role in the ANC and its fight against apartheid. Lutuli was also the first South African, the second black man and the first African to win a Nobel Peace Prize.
