I have an old IBM laptop monitor hanging around, and I am wondering if there is a way to modify the wires of it to make it into a computer display for my desktop.

Thanks.

You could, but in 99% of cases it would be cheaper and easier (much) to buy a flat panel monitor. You'd need several items of hardware and a very good understanding of electronics and skill with soldering, etc. to convert the old laptop. Usually it's not a simple RGB signal sent to the montitor part itself; you would need to locate the parts on the motherboard of the laptop that handle the decoding and encoding of the video signal into whatever format the monitor's panel itself requires. Then obviously you'd need to find out what kind of power is required by the fluourescent bulbs that provide your monitor's backlight, power those, and then also power the LCD panel and associated hardware itself. So, while this might not be a very detailed instruction manual that answers your question, hopefully I've provided enough information to at least point you in the right direction. Remember, Google is your friend! :)

If it's the actual laptop display that would be hard and I don't think worth it. If you're talking about taking it off the monitor and making a plug for it. Monitors are too cheap now to go through that. Thirft stores sell them for about 10 bucks. Just make sure it works.

No. The interface design is WAY beyond a hobby project.
