I agree!!! Knickers and panties share this mystery. I think possibly, at their inception, undergarments were in 2 pieces, to facilitate our bodily functions. I believe it was the Puritans who closed them to deter fornication!! I have never really thought this through until now, but it seems highly plausible!!!!!

Very good question. And the answer is not easy. We speak of a pair of knickers. But there are also two parts to a bra, So I think maybe it has gone into common usage over time. Brassiere comes from the French for bodice, which was originally a covering for the arm. Tricky one.

Bra is singular because one covers both. Knickers are plural because you have to buy a pair. (unless you are one legged).

A "bra" is clothing that supports 2 items, so therefore, "knickers" and
bra both should be plural....

Knickers is plural due to the two leg holes. I have no idea about bra. I was going to make it up but I changed my mind.

because bra doesn't have any holes but knickers got two holes to put your legs in!!! some got 3 holes. one in the middle to take your willy out quickly

I'm guessing because it's based on the fact it is one article of clothing and not how many things it can hold.
