Because they think they're smarter than him and like feeling smugly superior. However, what they don't realize is that by making fun of this man, they've probably gotten him quite a bit of money (from public appearances and the like).

I don't know how much people like him now, but at the time he proved to be the antithesis of what a pop icon should be. Not only that, but he was genuinely passionate for singing which helped people embrace him. In other words, he was so bad, liking him sent a big FU to the corporate music businesses and all the fake copycat talent that they stood for. Think of it this way, it's like hanging out with your best friend's retarded brother. You just can't dislike him, so you just end up politely smiling and feeling sorry for him, wishing him the best, even though you know deep down inside it isn't going to be much.

Yea he's weird, but he had the guts and the COURAGE to stand up to the judges on American Idol. I mean, would you go up there and sing, even though you knew you stunk but u tried ur best? Thats what he did.

Yes, he is weird. But he is also reeking of sincerity, naivete, earnestness and authenticity. I think people responded to him because there is quite a bit of "Hung" in all of us. Oddly, most people try to keep it hidden.

Because the pure stupidoty and nonregretfulness of him give people that sense of satisfaction they are looking for. Hey, if they can come home and see some one that is more pathetic then them, why wouldn't that cheer someone up? :)
