Because of the Revolutionary War the British were no longer able to send convicts to America... Well not as many anyway - they kept the biggest single bit - Canada...
But back on to subject ;)
This meant Britain decided to make a new colony in Port Jackson (Sydney) to send convicts to. This became the first permanent settlement of non-indigenous people in Australia.-Also later on (almost 100 years!)many Americans went to Australia and settled when gold was discovered.
