It costs too much and not much to do when you get there. Yes we really did go several times.

First, you need to know why we QUIT going to the moon. The US Apollo program was the NASA mission that built the Saturn V rockets, Apollo Capsule, and Lunar Landers used to go to the moon. In the 1970's, the public lost interest in the moon missions. NASA's budget is approved by congress, and of course, the congressmen want to do things that win votes. When the Apollo program started loosing popularity, NASA quit spending taxpayer money on the program and changed to running missions into LEO (Low Earth Orbit). A recession in the 70's also made it unpopular to spend billions of dollars going to the moon... and we beat the Russians there. Many people considered that the point of the mission and disregarded any scientific value. The rockets used to go to the moon were way too big to use for LEO missions so NASA quit building the SATURN V. Eventually the space shuttle was finished as a replacement. BUT, the space shuttle cannot go to the moon because it can't carry enough fuel to get there and back. It was never designed to. We do not go to the moon today because mankind does not have a vehicle capable of taking us there. Its not because we don't have the technology, but that we simply aren't building the rockets. We are working on making a new rocket to get to the moon, but again politicians are always looking for ways to get the most votes...

A lot of it just comes down to business. Somebody has to fund a trip to the moon, and it's not cheap. Plus, there's not an extraordinary amount of research that has to be done on the actual surface of the moon that we haven't already done and can't get through other means. For some places it's hard enough to get a budget approved for more office supplies!

DID we go to the moon? Yes. There are some kooky bored conspiracy theorists who try to say otherwise, but their claims just don't add up. The USSR was tracking the US all through the trip with radar, and if they had found good evidence to believe the US didn't land on the moon, believe me, they would have been the first to let the world know. Here are few sites that deunk the conspiracy theorists' claims:

Yes man really went to the moon.

We are not going there anymore right now because of the
huge, huge cost to do so. Also, it remains to be seen what
real benefits could be purchased with that high cost.

It is very possible that the war in Iraq has used up all the
extra money that the USA had for projects like maybe going
back to the Moon.

Not much more to be learned there. The moon might eventually be used as a jumping off point for missions to other places in the Solar System though.

And yes, man really did go there.

Why don't we go to the moon? Well, because we already have plenty of information from there. There isn't much else to be learned. Right now, we're more focused on trying to send humans to Mars because it is so similar to Earth. However, missions to Mars may take a few years to plan due to travelling issues and what not.

Costs too much. Been there, done that. Besides, we have a lot of cheese here already. Even California is advertising their happy cheese cows. The moon is made of a low quality cheese, unfit for human consumption.

I know for sure we went to the moon. Otherwise, why would we have moon boots? ;-)

We don't go to the moon anymore because the space race with the Soviet Union is over. And yes, we really went to the moon.
Trust me, all we need is for another country whom we don't like to get itchy to go into space and the space race will start all over again.
