i just recomended melatonin to someone else on here...
melatonin is just the natural chemical/hormone that your brain produces when it gets dark outside... it prepares you for sleep making you tired...you can purchase a bottle of the supplement for only a few dollars and it's very gentle and shouldnt leave you groggy in the morning, just refreshed... good luck!
oh and just 1 mg 20 minutes before you go to bed per night is all you need!

If you smoke tobacco, quit. Your lungs an pocketbook will thank you. If you can't quit don't smoke one hour before bedtime. Nicotiene is a stimulant and that will keep you up.

If you drink alcohol, quit. While it is a sedative it won't lead to restful sleep.

You should exercise but not more than three hours before you go to be bed.

Keep a set bedtime. Even on weekends. And keep a set wakeup time, too. Even on weekends. There is always room to tweak this a bit but not too much and not too often.

Try relaxing music before you go to bed. I listen to New Age kind of music to help relax me. Jonn Serrie, Kitaro, Enigma, Brian Eno, Roger Eno, and Vangelis are great to fall asleep to. I've listened to them for so long that the mere fact I've put them in my cd player and hit play is enough to knock me out.

Try counting sleep. It really works. Start at 300 and work your way back.

Wear comfortable clothes to bed. Invest in good, high count cotton sheets. I used to think a 250 count sheet was good. Then I tried 300. Now I'm up to 400.

I answered someone else's question who had a similar problem:

I used to have this problem when I was younger and it frustrated me to the point of aggravation (nothing pissed me off more than looking at my clock and seeing it was an hour and a half later from when I had gone to bed and turned off my light).

Nowadays I usually read a book (something I've read already but enjoy reading). I find the more I try to concentrate on reading, the more tired my eyes get. In fact, I have found that trying to focus your eyes on anything will tire them out and get you really sleepy (as opposed to keeping them shut and wishing for yourslef to fall asleep)....it works for me?

Are you waking up because you are hungry? Or is there something on your mind and it keeps buggin you, waking you up and then you start thninking about it an can't go back to sleep? Try eating a lot before you go to bed at night and take a hot bath to relax you. :)

Is something bothering you or on your mind that you keep thinking about? Whenever something bothers me or if my mind keeps thinking about random things it keeps me up.

Just try not to worry too much. Seems like you are under some stress.

Once you lay down in bed just think to yourself you have the whole night to yourself and you won't have to worry about anything else.

I've had this problem my whole life. You need to determine if you are depressed, anxious, or over caffeinated.

Doctors have some good drugs out there now like lisinopril, ambien, lunesta that might help.

Good luck finding the root.

I wish I DID have some, because I'm in the same boat! You may try taking a Tylenol PM before bed. I can't do that because I'm pregnant...but I HAVE done it in the past, and it does help.
