I've had quilting teachers recommend and I prefer to use the Schmetz Universal Point Needle size 10/70 or 12/80. You should be able to purchase them at any quilt store or craft store franchise (i.e. Joann's).

As for thread, I prefer Mettler Silk Finish sewing thread. A good rule of thumb for quilting thread. It is better to have a weaker thread and a stronger fabric than the other way around. If the quilt is put under enough stress to cause something to rip, better it be the thread (which can easily be resewn) than the fabric. That's why quilters use 100% mercantized cotton rather than a cotton poly blend.

Hope this helps.

Hi, I have 5 janome machines and these work the best for me.
Schmitz Universal 70/10 for the pieceing. You may want a heavier needle when you do the quilting. YLI has a wonderful 100% cotton thread that I have found easy to work with. Also the mettler polyblend is another very good thread. Enjoy your piecing.
