I had the same problem, until one day i felt so ill i went to the doctor. He rushed me into hospital that very same day to have a blood transfusion. They gave me 3 bags of blood over 3 days. They told me if i had have had 1 more period, then i wouldn't have been here now as i was at my lowest blood level. Once all was sorted i had the 'mirena' coil fitted, which has virtually stopped my periods, it contains a hormone which then makes your periods lighter. Maybe you could try that?? Good Luck.

Yes, heavy periods could cause anaemia, due to the amount of blood loss. If you are following a healthy diet and taking vitamins and iron, then you probably shouldn't have this problem. Many women feel weak and lethargic around their periods. Are you overweight? Do you take regular exercise? There could be some other hormonal imbalance causing these problems, which you could discuss with a sympathetic doctor, discussing your gynae history. Are you sexually active? One option could be to consider taking the contraceptive pill. From what I have heard, this can regulate periods, and make them lighter, although the side effects of some brands can include increased appetite and weight gain. Talk to your GP about PCOS, the pill and other gynae conditions, or as for a referral to a gynaecologist.

I think you may have been prescribed mefanemic acid for the blood flow, I currently take this as soon as my period starts and then 3 times a day until the end of my period. The flow weakens within 36 hours then my period is usually completely over within 4 days. Give your body a chance to get used to it and the nausea may stop, it has been a great product for myself as I suffered extremely heavy and long periods (8 days at a time or more ). If you do eat meat try eating moore red meat, my mum has always advised me to eat red meat to boost my iron levels.

If you are taking Iron tablets prescribed by your G P, can I suggest you take them with Orange Juice [Pure Orange not Cordial]

Has your Doctor ever suggested that you see a Gynaecologist?
there maybe something else wrong i.e. Fibroids, that can give you Heavy Periods.

Why don't you make another appointment at your Surgery and perhaps speak to a Female Doctor about it.

I wish you Luck......have had this problem when I was in my Twenties, and know it's miserable.

You say you are taking vitamins only are you taking the right ones my Mum has bad anaemia and the best one for that is B12 there are some types of anaemia that iron don't do much good, was told that last week when I took my Mum to see a haematologist. Do a search for different types of anaemia and you will find lots of info. Good luck

My daughter had this problem, going on the pill helped reduce periods but she had to stop for other hormone reasons (thyroid - maybe some kind of link there?). She became aenemic and her doctor gave her iron supplements for several months, much more than the sort you can buy in the shops. You need to have blood tests regularly to monitor your iron levels.

There are some good medications such as tranexamic acid and mefenamic acid that really help with painful and heavy periods, you need to keep seeing your GP until they sort this as just taking an iron supplement won't help.

I agree with some of the nswers. Go on the PILL. I had very heavy painful periods for years before I went on the pill, and the pain and heavy flow never returned after I went off the pill. Ask your doc what he thinks.
