Friar Laurence, without the consent or knowledge of either the Capulet or Montague families, agrees to the union of Romeo and Juliet as husband and wife because he beleives that it will cause the 2 families to forget their rivalry and cease their hostilities. He proves to be correct at the end of the play. By this time, the lovers are, of course, dead by this point.
