People say the universe was created or formed by the big bang, but how is that possible? When the universe wasn't around, what was? Nothing? How is that possible? How can something be formed from nothing?

Yes so something had to create the materials required for the big bang right? You wonder, how is stuff just here. Has it been here for all of infinity? How did it get here? It had to of been created at some point right? Scientists may have evidence that agrees with big bang theory and what not but they dont take on the question, How did the material for the big bang get here?

Maybe the universe is an endless cycle of creation and destruction, and if there was a beginning, how would you define it? What counts as the beginning and what counts as the end? Existence seems to be continuous, matter is neither created nor destroyed, time is continuous, maybe the Universe is continuous too, maybe all of existence just simply is, eternal presence?

One of the common misconceptions is that on the beginning there was this cloud of matter the size, depends who you ask, of football, golf ball, pea or grain of sand.
Matter is basically an empty space with tiny elementary particles strategically positioned in it. The electric interaction between particles in our hand and the wall make us think that the wall EXISTS, is solid and hard. Of course elementary particle is just a wave of energy of specific frequency. According to quantum theory the energy contained in a particle(quanta) is given by simple formula E=h*frequency. Where h is just a number(0.00..(33 zeros in tortal)..0066262). And again everybody knows this one E=mc^2, which could be converted to m(matter or mass)=E(energy)/(c^2). In wards matter is energy divided by speed of light squared.
So we did not have a foot ball at the beginning! There was just a fixed ammount of energy which we can perceive today with our senses. This amount of energy remains constant throughout the history of our universe and can not be changed.
Somebody once said: “the universe is composed with music, math and geometry” Geometry represents all the spatial dimensions (there should be 11 of them according to today’s physics), math represents the laws of physics and the way they interact. Music is a composition of frequencies, quantum energies which form the matter. The only question left to ask now is “Who is the composer?”

This is just a theory, of course, but before the big bang there was a big ball of condensed mass, which, after imploding, gave way to the different expanding galaxies and astral bodies that we are aware of today.
What was before that big ball of concentrated mass? We do not know, but the creation of the universe comes from inside the universe itself, which is desintegrating or deconstructing, instead of the notion of a "demiurgue" or god who has constructed it from the nothing.

It can't. Something formed the Universe.

You're right, it's not possible. The big bang certainly is possible, but that it is all there is/was is only a belief, more likely to be proven incorrect in the future.

I am not an expert in science but here are a few of my favourite links I read, read and keep watching for updates.

Again, are you seeking an answer through science or philosophy? If philosophy, different religions express different philosophical ideas for one question.

Read and keep reading till you find a satisfactory answer. These links will give you information to expand your knowledge.

Being nothing does't means it's not something. Nothing is something.

All that is was created ex nihilo by that which is uncreated, God. "In the beginning God created....".
