If someone breaks into your home, and you do shoot, you'd better aim to kill. In most states our legal system is so screwed up that the intruder is actually allowed to sue YOU for malicious wounding. Plus, unless the intruder is fully 100% physically inside your home, there are legal "gray areas" where YOU can be arrested for murder in some situations.
If I realized someone was entering my home, I would do two things: flip the master control on the breaker panel so as to kill all power, plunging the house into total darkness, and I would grab either my katana or my crossbow. I know where all the furniture is in the dark - they don't. By the time they get their bearings I can be in position, and then they'll never know what hit 'em. Plus, my weapons are silent - as opposed to a gun - so it could all happen without anyone else being aware, and I would simply be digging a grave in my backyard by the moonlight.

There's no reason to have a gun (or 4) in the house if you don't shoot.

Not if I didn't have to. If I can get the bad guy spread eagle on the floor and have someon else hold a gun on them I'd just cuff them while we would wait for the PD

I don't have a gun at my house but my boyfriend has one at his. He won't tell me where it is unfortunately. I'm not too worried, he has 3 guard dogs and I guess I could throw a tape measure or paintbrush, not much else in the room.

Depends on the situation.
Being in my home isn't enough for me. I need to feel that I or someone I love is in danger.
I will err on the side of drilling the perp if someone I love is in conceivable danger.
