It depends on the time signature, or the beats per measure. Music is cut up in fractions, mostly on a factor of 4. Any multiple or division of 4 could be your time signature. Usually, the more active and lively music has a more divisive time, such as 4/4 or 8/4. If the music is faster, it is usually divided into smaller sections, or beats. There are as many time signatures as there are fractions. Some of the more progressive music can use 7's and 9's in their count. It's all about math!!
