I know we have different backgrounds and education levels, but shouldn't facts still be facts? Is financial and political gain the only reason politicians run or the media report differing stories.

Perspective or point of view differs from person to person with individual sets of circumstance actually creating reality that appears to be conflicting depending upon what each person experiences. What is truth to one person may be obviously a mistake to another depending upon what point of view each of their experiences allow them.

Sure facts are facts but how we interpret them is what makes people so divided on certain issues. Abortion is a good one. Fact is a fetus is a fetus. Thats a certainty. Does that fetus have a soul or personality? That is not a fact. Thats a matter for debate. I support abortion because a woman is the only one who can decide what happens to her body. Other people who are Pro-Life say that fetus is life (which it is) and that stopping that life is murder. Sure stopping that life means ending what it could have been but calling it murder. That part is debatable. A lot of these issues are not black and white. There is a lot of grey in between that can only be hashed out by argueing one's point. Education and social background also play a big part in how we decide what side of the issue we want to be on. Our society has always been that way and always will be that way. Thats how this country has progressed through the years.

As far as the last part of your question, unfortunately, the answer is yes-at least for most of them. Most of them like the power and influence they get with being in office. Some probably started out with good intentions but fell into the abyss because the system works a certain way and you either fight it or you go with the flow. You fight it and you will most likely lose. Our country was founded by white, rich, male landowners and has continued to be run by the same type. Originally they were the only ones who could vote therefore they were the ones with the power. That will never change. Fortunately the "common folk" have some power, via the vote, so we can at least make it a little comfortable for our selves.

Yes, dear, facts are facts, but there are still as many different 'opinions' on those facts as you could possibly think of and then some. You may have one opinion on something and I may have a completely opposite opinion on it ... even though the 'fact' at the center of it doesn't change at all. In America, our Constitution was written just so that we would always be FREE to 'disagree' on any subject ... so instead of being so worried about How this could happen, maybe you should just celebrate the fact that YOU CAN SEE IT HAPPENING AROUND YOU EVERY DAY. In many countries, people don't have this very basic freedom ... but Americans have since this country began.

People acquire & process information differently. Combine this with wide variations in life experience & you will get widely divergent opinions. Facts are facts, but not everybody agrees on what the facts are. Many don't know what the facts are & some deliberately misrepresent them. This is the way it has always been & this is the way it will always be. Humans are so illogical.

no, many politicians want to make the world a better place and get their views heard and make changes. americans are divided due to all the different religions we have, regions we live in, financial status which greatly varies, optomism v. pessimism, conservative v. liberal, the do-gooder and the MYOB type. all of these will effect whether or not you support an issue or not. (if your poorer, have a blue collar occupation, black, are catholic or jewish, live in the northeast or the west coast, or have a phd in a social area you tend to vote liberally. if you are protestant, white, graduate degree but not a phd, work in business or management or a white collar job, and are middle to upper middle class, or live in the south or midwest you tend to vote as a conservative)

People will find all kinds of reasons to divide-
you see a social group, like at a holiday party, and it's still young vs. old and female vs male.
We only really unite against a common enemy.
And they're not on our soil right now, and we don't even believe that they were QUITE the enemy that Bush made them out to be.
So what are we fighting for?
Our nasty old selves.

ibelieve it is because of those things you mentioned - education, financial & family history. facts ARE facts, however some people shoose to ignore them and listen to others instead. gracious, how many people believe everything they read -look at the stupidity surrounding the book the davinci code - even the author said - it's fiction and yet people believe. i thinkit's easier for them to believe that which is simple and doesn't curtail their way of thinking.

Some people feel that they have a right to other peoples hard earned money because they are too lazy to work for their own! That's it in a nutshell.
