I'm barely going to start weightlifting and build muscle, but I've never done it before. How do you know how much you can lift or are supposed to lift?

The rule of thumb is:

If you can lift it more than 15 times it's too light.
If can't lift it more that 6 times it's too heavy.

This is for all weight lifting exercises.

I trained with USA , IFBB, contestants. And a carry many certifications.

Start off my lifting the bar and go up from there. Start with 3 sets of 10 reps with about a 45 second break in between each set. When you are completing those 3 sets completely move your weight up 5 to 10 pounds. And so on and so forth.

NEVER max out unless you have a spotter. Once you do that, you can decide how much to lift. Make sure you don't over do it and get injured.

u should star off using dumbells, 15 lbs. is good. then advancee when it becomes easy. When you think you are ready to bench-press try it out.
