Awww... and I was just going to tell you it's called "theodicy". We also refer to it as "the problem of evil" for obvious reasons.

If you're a Christian, I believe the answer is Satan. The devil in other words, as in Flip Wilson's famous phrase "The devil made me do it!" If you're Jewish, you know evil people do evil things (usually to US!). If you're Muslim, I believe they blame everything on Satan too, or the United States. They seem to consider the two interchangeable. Buddhists believe everything is Karma -- cause and effect -- what gets around, goes around, in other words. And the atheists just don't give a damn about the cause. They're lookin' for a solution!

The Greek for evil is pornaros from which we get porn and all its drivatives including pornography (graphic evil). Another word which would actually be a good name for the study of evil is pornology.
