I'm filling out a form online and I need to write some information about myself, no more than 500 characters. I thought characters meant individual letters, but one of my friends is telling me it means words. Who's right? The form holds way more than 500 words, so I'm not sure which it is.

Characters are essentially keystrokes.

Each key creates one character. Spaces, letters, and punctuation are all individual characters.

Words are composed of characters; they are not characters themselves.

God bless.

When you fill in something on line, the word 'characters' refers to the total number of keystrokes that you can use. This includes even space and any punctuation mark . It is not the number of words that are denoted by 'characters'.
It is incorrect for the form to provide space for more than 500 characters when the maximum permitted is 500.
