A normal ink pen used on earth requires gravity to draw the liguid down. Its difficult to write overhead with a pen on earth, because gravity pulls the liquid away from the ball point. And as you know there is very little gravity in space so the ink is basically suspended inside the ink well. So, the next time you find yourself in space, you want to make sure you have at least a pencil and sharpener to write with. The earth ink pen is no good. However, pens which are pressurized inside the ink well, will work in space. The pressure forces the ink out of the pen as you write. And thats why they are known as "The Amazing Space Pen." Carry one of these with you everywhere and you'll never find yourself in space without a writing insturment.

A normal pen requires gravity to make the ink flow from the barrel to the tip. That's why if you leave a pen upside down in a cup sometimes it doesn't work right away. There is no appreciable gravity in space.
If you leave a pen outside a spacecraft in the shade (out of the sun's rays) the ink inside will freeze.
If you leave a pen outside a spacecraft in sunlight the ink will boil and the pen will explode from gas pressure inside.

You need gravity to use a regular ball-point pen. Since there is no gravity in space except near large bodies, a pen won't work.

since the ink inside the pen is liquid, and since in space everything floats, the liquid is not able to travel down the tube and into the paper.
