First: change the mixed fraction (8 and 5/6) into an improper fraction by multiplying the whole number "8" by the denominator "6"...
8(6) = 48
*Add the result "48" with the numerator "5" & place the new result over the denominator...
(48 + 5)/6
= 53/6
Now, you have > 53/6 + 1/3
Sec: find the greatest common denominator which is (6)...
53/6 = x/6 + 1/3 = x/6
Third: find the missing numbers that give you "6" when multilpied with the denominators as well as the numerators....
(53/6)(1) = 53/6 + (1/3)(2) = 2/6
Fourth: add the current fractions with the same denominator...
53/6 + 2/6
55/6

now you do the math, and if it's greater than 6/6 you add the 1 and have the leftover amount in the */6 category.
