I'm not sure what life was like in Mesoamerica however I can a little about Ancient Japan. Ancient Japan can be divided into two periods Jomon and Yayoi.

The Jomon period (10,000 to 300 BC) was pretty much a hunter-gather society. The highlight of this period is that those that lived in the Jomon period have produce the oldest form of pottery.

The Yayoi period (300 BC to 250 AD) is were we see the developement of agriculture that leads to the creation of settlements. Uniquely enough you see the developement of warefare as well. The Chinese Dynastic histories refer to these people as the people of Wa. You also see the developement of bronze as well.

Most ancient civilizations develope the same way but generally the staple crop is different. What we do knwo about pre-European Mesoamerica is limited to the Florintien codex and archeology.

Sorry hope this helps
