generally there is a default settlement awarded (as long as the requests/demands are found reasonable by the judge) and the person who does not show up loses. However if you are being sued for a very large sum of money by a company or say by the police dept or something like that a bench warrant would ALSO be issued.

Depending on the case, sometimes they lose automatically for failure to appear.

Most often than not, there's a recess and it's re-scheduled.
