Oh my gosh, I LOVE making toys for my little cuddle babys! (Translation: My rats) O.K., here's some of their favorites:

~ Take an old T-shirt and cut off one of the sleeves. Sew up one of the open sides, (I usually use strips of fabric from the body of the shirt and punch holes with sissors to put it through. Don't worry about making it pretty, they're just going to chew it up anyway!) then cut along the side from the remaining opening to about an inch from the seam you just made. Punch holes in the corners, put some fabric strips in them and tie it up and...
TA-DA! a ratty hammock that dosen't cost $15.00!

~ Any cardboard boxes that used to have food in them or that are undyed. I figure that they won't use toxic dye on anything that will be anywhere near food. Rats love to shred them, and as soon as soon as one is destroyed, you just put in another one. You can also fill them with shredded paper and hide some treats in the bottom. That will keep your rat happy for at least a half-hour.

~ Remember the old T-shirt? You can tear (or cut) long strips off the body, braid them, and have a rope that you can hang in the cage. I usually tie a few knots in mine to make it stronger and more resiliant to chewing.

~ Take a bamboo skewer and put a bunch of healthy treats on it, like carrots, apple, banana, that sort of thing. You can leave it in your rats cage all day, just remember to take it out when you go to bed, other wise it could mold and hurt your ratty.

~ Take her out and let her run around in a rat-proofed room. Put a bunch of boxes and stuff on the floor, sit back and watch. My rats are really funny, they go nuts! :)

~ If you don't feel like making toys, most toys designed for large parrots are safe for rats. They can climb and chew on them to their heart's content.

Hope this helped! :)
