The design is up to you or whomever you decide to let design your layout(landscape companies can do this). there are countless possible pavers or stones to use, choose one to your liking, taking into consideration what goes with your house. You should "cut in" your desired pathway or patio and dig into the soil enough to put in sand which you need to compact with a tamper or vibrating plate. Make this bed as level as you can. Lay your stones or pavers in and fill in the edges and spaces in between with more sand. Next "sweep" the sand into the cracks and edges. You can outline walkways or patios with a vinyl or plastic rubber edgers. Cut the desired pathway and put in the edging using nails or spikes to hold the edging in place. On the walkway side you will have a smooth edge, on the outside you'll see the spike holders, just rake loose dirt up to it and seed with grass. It really is a simple process. good luck.

Check out EP Henry or Pavestone bricks. They may seem expensive, but you get what you pay for. They last, and look great. They are easy to install too. Check out home depot for the materials, and they will have directions right on the bags of stone and sand you will need.

Dig down to your brick depth plus about 4". Lay in a sheet of porous black material - it will hold in the stones to prevent them from sagging too far into the soil and also help with drainage. Put down 3" of rough stone and pack it down. You can use a machine, but a hand compactor is cheaper. Put in edgers now to demark the boundries of the stone, making sure to test fit the stone in the area so it fits. Then put down another black porous sheet. This sheet will prevent the sand you are about to put down from leaking into the rough stones you just compacted. Put in 1" of sand and pack it down. Level it, then pack it again. Put in your bricks directly on the sand, and use a rubber mallet to make sure they are even.
