Venezuela is not a socialist country any more, with the new laws in place it is becoming a dictatorship.

actually it looks like it is moving the way of one famous socialist country not 70 years ago in Europe.

And yes, having that form of aggressive socialist country in the Americas MAY have a destabilizing effect. we may see revolts in neighboring countries, people will flee north towards the US. Free Trade will be hampered because of the nationalization of business. Intellectuals are being pushed as leaders to accommodate party supporters who are not qualified.

already people are fleeing Venezuela because they are afraid of what Hugo Chavez has planned for them.

It can become a very bad thing depending on what Hugo does next. but by making him self dictator... I think we are only seeing the beginning of a very bad time in the Americas.

There's some US compamies that operated there that aren't too happy! A law that sharply raised taxes on foreign oil companies operating in Venezuela in 2001. This time, the law will give Chavez a free hand to bring under state control some oil and natural gas projects that are still run by private companies — the latest in a series of nationalist energy policies in Venezuela, a top oil supplier to the United States and home to South America’s largest gas reserves.

It will affect American companies that have capital invested in Venezuela. They will have to pay more for the privilege of doing business there.................To be honest, Democracy is a blending of socialism and capitalism; someone has to pay the price when a country goes to far too the left (Venezuela) or too far to the right (America)

Truth is you have to look to history to see the difference between far right dictatorships (fascism) and far left dictatorships (communism). Either can exist without it becoming a dictatorship. Both are detrimental to society.

I don't know about America but Chavez's rise to a virtual dictatorship will surely cause pangs of jealousy in Bush.
