In this case, the expression is factored...

First: find the least common factor > "5"

Sec: multiply 5 by the missing terms to get the original expression...

= 5(x + 2)

No matter what you plug in for x, you will get the same thing for both.

Some examples:
x = 2
5(2) +10 = 10 + 10 = 20
5(2 + 2) = 5(4) = 20

x = 7
5(7) + 10 = 35 + 10 = 45
5(7 + 2) = 5(9) = 45

This is a specific result of the distributive property, a basic axiom of the real numbers, which makes the connection between addition and multiplication.

For any a,b, and c
a(b + c) = ab + ac

It's the distributive property... The two equations are equal... 5 (x+2) = 5x + 10 because : 5 * x = 5x and 5 * 2 = 10... so 5x +10 = 5(x+2)
Basically, the distributive property is # * (#'s in parentheses)
Example:
x = 2:
5(2 +2)= 10 +10
By the way... There is no value for x unless there is a = sign

Its factoring. 5x and 10 both have a common factor of 5. When you take 5 out of 5x you are left with x. When you take 5 out of 10 you are left with 2. Leaving you with 5 (x+2).

Distributive Property.

5(x+2)

times the 5 with the X(which is 1x) =5x
then times the 5 with the 2=10
=5x + 10

Hope this helps a little. If I can use arrows I would have been able to explain better!!!

5 times x = 5x
5 times 2 = 10
so 5 times x+2 (which is what 5(x+2) means) = 5x+10

distributive property....u multiply the outside # by every term in the inside. s times x is 5x and 5 times 2 is 10. so it becomes 5x+10

factor it..

the common factor in that term is 5
dividing 5 from (5x+10) gives you (x+2)

if you were asked what is the factor, that's 5(x+2)

the answer is -3 because 5 x -3 + 10 = 5(-3 + 2)
