He's talking about the .NET programming framework, not domain names.

You use .NET because it's Microsoft's currently supported programming platform. There's no more reason needed nor any better a reason.

Probably because all the good .com names are taken.
There are other .names as well.
A new one just coming out is .ws stands for website.
Go to Godaddy.com and have a look through all the available names.
