They don't. Many communities don't have a daily newspaper serving them other than remotely (50 or more miles away, with little or no community coverage). Weekly newspapers are going strong, but readership is falling off for all newspaper categories. So, if there aren't readers for a newspaper, then it would follow that residents don't feel they need a newspaper. Competition from 24-hour Cable news, from the Internet and from its associated RSS news services, cell phones and bluetooth technology have made it difficult for print media to survive in many places; although there remain those loyal readers, mostly older people who have read a newspaper their life-long, and who keep the media afloat. Young people are getting news elsewhere, in spite of the venerable Newspaper in the Classroom program which I worked with 30 years ago. I understand that entertainment and humor shows are now sources of news for many in their 20s and 30s. Can newspapers, even the biggest and strongest, survive in the long run? You'll probably be the one to answer that question, rather than me.

They need newspapers to be informed. This can be information from around the globe, in their country, in their state, in their city, in their suburb etc.

A community newspaper can also endorse community events, advertise any community changes, introduce new people to the community, it can be used for funeral/birth notices etc.

It can give a community a sense of pride. If they are able to see what is happening even if they aren't involved then they are at least up to date with what is happening in the world.

We are, most of us, information junkies. If we dont know whats going on, we think we're missing out on something. We think somethings going on somewhere and we have to know about it and get all the various perspectives about it so we can feel good about knowing whats going on. We think its our civic duty to get information, to assimilate it, spread it around, repeat it like gossip and defend it. If it wasnt for newspapers, there's be no advertising industry, no editorials, no classified ads, no sports pages, no comics. think of all the people who'ld be out of work.
