I recommend reading anything and everything by Sarah Dessen. My favorite is The Truth About Forever. Just Listen is her most recent book. All are good.
Joan Bauer is another favorite author of mine. Hope Was Here is my favorite...and Squashed is my second favorite.

Ask the English teachers at your school for a list of books they draw from and then ask for suggestions from them that compliment those lists.
You might also want to consider starting with a standard canon of literature so that you will be prepared to understand the nuances and references in more modern work.
