x^2 +2x -3 = 0
Take the coefficient of x which is 2, divide it by 2 getting 1, then square that getting 1.

Now take the 1 and add it to both sides of the equation getting;
x^2 +2x +1 -3 = 1
You have just made the perfect square x^2 +2x +1
(x+1)^2 -3 =1
(x+1)^2 = 4
Take square root of both sdes getting
x+1 = +/- 2
x = - 1 +/- 2
x = -1+2 = 1, and
x = -1 - 2 = -3

This can be factored:

(x -1)(x+3)

To complete the square, you would change this to:

(x+1)(x+1) - 3
(x+1)^2 - 3
