The first three were called the World Championship Game.

The first and second superbowls were called the superbowls because they were superbowls. You can't have superbowl 1 unless it is called the superbowl after all. Anything before the first superbowl was called the National Championship game if I remember correctly. Check espn.com to varify. They should have a record of every national championship no matter what it was called at the time.

AFL-NFL World Championship game they were later called Superbowl I and II to spice things up (the name). It was later called the super bowl after the Joe Namath incident.

I believe it was simply called the "National Championship". There is so much on the web about Superbowl history this week, it should be easy to find.
